The Beef Checkoff Strives to Educate Patients with Evidence-Based Science Translated Through Food
Bedford, PA - Family Physicians from across Pennsylvania learned how to engage and educate their patients with evidence-based science surrounding beef’s nutritional benefits, but translated through food, along with behavior change techniques, during the Fall Conference of the Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians (PAFP), held in Pittsburgh, PA on November 12-14, 2021. The Beef Checkoff’s Northeast Beef Promotion Initiative was noted as one of the sponsors of the conference.
Over 100 Family Physicians from universities, K-12 schools, health systems, community clinics, and hospitals attended this fall conference, one of their first in-person education conferences in over a year.
Beef’s nutritional messaging, as well as approachable recipes and cookery skills were demonstrated during the Healthy Eating and Pairing session, which featured Beth Stark, RDN, LDN, Director of Channel Marketing and Nutrition Outreach with the Northeast Beef Promotion Initiative, Chef Robert Singuenza with the Westin Conference Center, Pittsburgh, PA and Robert Fitchett, Assistant Manager of Refucilo Winery, based in Pittsburgh. The trio shared a series of beef and wine pairings with the goal of empowering and providing the Family Physicians with key messages and practical tips that they can then share with their patients, as they related to beef and nutrition.
Beth Stark, RDN, LDN shared,
"By reaching patients through an audience of trusted family physicians, we can help them feel confident in choosing lean beef as a nutritious source of protein that aligns well with eating patterns and supports a variety of chronic conditions like heart disease, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and more."
Conference attendees also engaged with Checkoff staff and collected printed recipes and beef nutrition brochures to share with their patients during the exhibit hours.

The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States may retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national Checkoff program, subject to USDA Approval.
